13. “Cleaning Out the Sucker”

After the shepherd came across the remains of the dead lambs, he walked into the Nevada mountain meadow, where he found the lion waiting for him. The animal crouched to attack, but the man walked forward, unwavering, raising his makila, his walking stick, high above his head as his only weapon. The great cat growled in warning, a deep ominous rumble from its chest. The man did not stop. They were only a few feet apart when the lion, eyes burning red, sprang toward him. For an instant, it seemed they would clash. Then the animal arched suddenly in the air, landed on the ground beside the man, and retreated, snarling in defeat and shame.

Later, the man’s son, who became a distinguished author, wrote of his father’s valor, and another son used the brother’s book to help himself become governor of Nevada. Some saw in the shepherd’s story a simple man of almost biblical virtues, the kind of example Nevadans eagerly embraced, sending the book to their friends as proof that the state was not all corruption and glitter. Later still there were those who came to see it as something else, something more, the brave old man confronting a predator as Nevada and his son, one of its leaders, never could.
